I haven't written for a while but it's the to blog again. I recently got a Border Collie puppy and he is 11 weeks old. I haven't had a puppy for 10 years so this is a great adventure for me and the pup. He name is Blair Trigain. Trigain is 60 in Welsh and Blair was my 60th Birthday present. My friends instead of giving me gifts all contributed towards a puppy. I was so busy during the weeks that he was 8 weeks old, so I only got him when he was 9 weeks old. Not a bad age as he spent another week

Is it so bad to buy a puppy from a breeder? There is such hype these days about "adopt, don't buy" that people who buy a pedigree puppy is frowned upon for doing it. Good breeders are improving their breed. It is the cross breeds that land up in shelters. A very small percentage of pedigree dogs land up in a rescue shelter. A good breeder will take back a dog that was bred by them, unlike cross breeds which are sold to pet shops or even worse dumped. So I don't want to be judged because I

Wet weather.  It has been raining for most of the day yesterday and continuously today. As much as we need the rain, it can be very frustrating for active dogs. So how do we keep them occupied so that they don't destroy the house? Brain games are wonderful - these toys are especially made to stimulate a dog to think.  Treats are hidden and the dog has to use its nose or paws to get to the treat. Another game is hide and seek - the owner will hide a special toy and the dog has to find it. The first few t

House Training. I am often called to do a consult for a dog that is not house trained and recently to a 4 year old dog. I  cannot believe that someone would allow this to go on for 4 years before doing something about it. It is going to be difficult and the owner has to be committed to following the recommendations.

"When you love a dog so much that you are able to find a new home for her" So many times I hear people say that that could never give their dog away. A wonderful statement, however when two dogs are fighting so badly that one is going to be killed and they have tried everything, then it is time to find a new home for one. I  had this situation yesterday with a French Bulldog and a Labrador. We had tried everything to get them together but the Frenchie was determined to "take out " the La

I went to a consultation today - a house with 3 Bulldogs, all female. The two older Bulldogs are sisters of about a year, and the younger one is 5 months. The two sisters have had a few fights. All dogs came from the same breeder. Firstly, it is not good for people to get siblings from the same litter, and secondly not two females. Added to that, a third female is sold, and all dogs are under two years - a recipe for disaster. The problem is that these days owner's feel guilty about leaving their puppy

I see so many people walking their dog around the suburbs which is great.  However, I don't approve when they allow their dog to run up to gates and bark at the dogs that are behind them. So often, dogs behind gates cannot get to the dog outside so they  turn on each other and fights break out. The person walking by just continues, leaving fighting dogs behind the gate. If the walking dog is off lead then it is important that it is under the owner's control and behaves properly towards other dogs.

When people arrive at training their dog /puppy must be on a lead. What I have noticed is that almost everyone has the handle part of the lead slipped through their hand and onto their wrist. Added to that they then wind the excess around the wrist. When they have to take the lead off it is a huge process of unravelling the lead. What worries me and I have seen it, is when a dog suddenly pulls away and the owner is dragged off sometimes even falling face down because their hand is caught in the lead. So, th

When doing a home visit and a dog is jumping and out of control I ask the owner to put their dog on a lead.  They are surprised when the dog calms down. The lead  is a calming tool but more than that, when on a lead a dog cannot run away, chase /jump on people or try to attack dogs or people and the owner can help to guide the dog into calm behaviour.

The Yellow Dog project was started a few years ago. Dogs with problems would wear a yellow bow on their lead or collar to indicate that they need space. It has never really taken off here which is a pity as I think it is a great thing. A company called "Billabone" makes bandannas for dogs and their range includes a yellow one which says "I need space". I have sold some to dogs attending my training classes and I just wish more people who walk in parks would get them for their own dog/s a
